Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 2 : For Myself – Yuji Itadori’s Journey Begins!

Hello everyone!
Welcome back to another exciting anime review.

Jujutsu Kaisen is back with its 2nd episode and, it is all that we have ever wanted. The story unravels in an exciting turn of events.

Satoru Gojo arrives at the scene of the massacre. Fushigoru is down and suffering from injuries.

Satoru Gojo is a goofy guy, fun-loving but, when he buckles down, he is a monster at martial arts. He is intrigued by Yuji, who has swallowed the cursed object.

He wants to go head first against him in his transformed state for 10 seconds. Satoru Gojo is so confident that if Yuji goes out of control, he can definitely stop him.

Being a manga reader, Satoru Gojo is a literal beast. He is powerful and one of the most entertaining characters that Jujutsu Kaisen has to offer.

For 10 seconds, Yuji, possessed by Sukuna, spars against Gojou and still couldn’t lay a finger on him. He was so fast that he whooped the living daylights out of Sukuna. It’s just the second episode, and the fight was truly impressive. The animation was clean and, Gojou Satoru is my favorite, hands down.

Yuji shockingly gains control of Sukuna as promised and, he is subdued by Gojou after. Fushigoru requests Gojou that Yuji not be executed as a curse and, his teacher gladly acknowledges his request.

Back in the creepy room where Itadori is shackled, Gojo explains to him about the fingers and the demon that is Ryoumen Sukuna. Yuji is given two options. Either be executed directly or consume all 20 parts of the fingers and be executed. In the end, he has to die, but the notion behind the decision is what counts.

The great thing about this anime adaptation is that they are sticking as close as they can to the source material. The continuity is not being interrupted and, the world-building of Jujutsu Kaisen given importance.

Unlike God of Highschool, Jujutsu Kaisen focuses on fleshing out its characters and the world before entering into the fight sequences. The animators did a great job regarding this, and it is to be appreciated.

Yuji Itadori is a highschool kid, and facing such circumstances in his life is traumatizing. He visits the hospital to meet his seniors who, were injured in the aftermath of the incident at school. He sees for himself that leaving curses to roam free around the aura of Sukuna’s cursed fingers is not something he can allow. He also cremates his grandfather, who passed away on the night of the incident. The author subtly compares death and unnatural death in such a way as to pave the way for Yuji to make a difficult decision.

Gojo tells Itadori that it isn’t an easy task to become a Jujutsu sorcerer, and he may come across unnatural and gruesome deaths along the way. Yuji decided that for the greater good, he has to do it. He decides to follow his grandfather’s last words and eat all the parts of Sukuna. He doesn’t care what happens after that, but the choice of choosing how you die is what will drive him forward. It sounds like twisted logic, but the emotion and belief behind it are what matters. Freedom to choose is what is conveyed.

When I first read the manga, Jujutsu technical school in Tokyo was a spectacle to behold. The architecture, the environment it was situated in was so engaging. The anime has brought that same feeling to me. The environments, the Japanese culture, and the artistic originality of the vicinity is mesmerizing and needs to be appreciated. They have done so much justice to this anime that it makes me teary-eyed thinking about it.

Ryoumen Sukuna surfaces on Yuji’s skin and threatens Gojo. After possessing Yuji’s body, the first person he was going to kill was Gojo. Gojo being a confident guy is honored that Ryoumen Sukuna wants to kill him. He accepts the challenge.

Satoru Gojon describes Ryomen Sukana as a demon with four arms who revealed over the world 1000 years ago and was considered the King of curses.

Let’s dig a bit deeper into Japanese Folklore. The Sukuna was a two-faced demon who, according to the “Chronicles of Japan” (compiled in 720), ruled the Hida region with an iron fist until it was conquered by Emperor Nintoku (313-399). It had one face in front and one in the back and had four arms and legs. In two arms it held bows and arrows.
Woodworking people of Hida, Enku depicted him with an ax instead.
He put the two faces in front, one friendly, one with a wild expression.
In Hida, this deity is seen, as the founder of the domain, Hida no Kuni. Hida folklore, however, claims that he defeated an evil dragon and is an incarnation of Kannon with the power to grant salvation. While “Nihonshoki” described Ryomen-sukuna as a villain and an enemy of the emperor, people in Hida and Mino Provinces treated Ryomen-sukuna as a hero and benefactor and worshipped him. I believe that this is the same character that the author has based his demon on. According to the lore, maybe Ryoumen Sukuna could turn out to be a savior, but a villainous one at that.

Yuji is introduced to the principal Yaga Masamichi. He looks like a cool guy but is seen, making toys. It was very contradictory at first, but when we saw the use of his skills, the world was introduced to a really cute and fierce form of fighting.

The principal was quite straightforward at asking the reasons behind Yuji joining the school. He sets his green bear doll to attack Yuji and was ordered to not back down until he got a proper answer from Yuji.

The conversation between the principal and Yuji was really interesting. It was a battle between the convictions and beliefs of 2 different people. Trying to find common ground and the hope of educating Yuji of what it means to be a Jujutsu sorcerer.

Yuji Itadori, tells him straight forward that he doesn’t know how he will die or what will be the circumstances, but he doesn’t want to live a life in regret. He is the only one who can consume Sukuna and, he is going to achieve that. The story is well thought out and, the characteristics of each person are very well portrayed in this anime. It especially conveys to the audience.

Yuji is accepted into Jujutsu technical Highschool. His journey begins. Satoru Gojo is a friendly and likable character. More than anything, I feel he cares for his students the most. He tells Yuji that he is now a vessel and a tracker to find the missing pieces of Sukuna. It’s a bumpy road ahead and, they are off to pick up the 3rd first-year student.

The highlight of this episode is the ending song. It reminds of the ’70s with its hip-hop genre and, watching it you, just want to groove with your favorite characters. I have been watching it on repeat for two days now. It’s just unbelievable. This anime is looking better and better with each passing episode. For an anime that is surrounded by eerie mystery, curses, and demons, there is a little fun in it as well.

Until Next time. See ya!
